Brazil accepts historic commitment to reduce greenhouse gases

Respect for the environment has definitively has been put on Brazil’s agribusiness production agenda. One of the main actions of the Lula government in this field was the Sectorial Plan for Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change for the Consolidation of a Low Carbon Agriculture Economy (ABC Plan).

Created in 2010 from the voluntary commitment made by Brazil at the UN Conference on Climate Change, the ABC Plan’s priorities are the recovery of degraded areas and pastures, planting of commercial forests, an integrated crop-livestock-forest system and waste treatment.

The Harvest Plan 2014/2015 provides some R$ 4.5 billion in funding to finance actions such as preservation and restoration of permanent preservation areas and legal reserves, implementation of organic farming systems and reduction of deforestation by expanding agricultural activities and agroforestry in degraded areas or those undergoing recovery.

The Agricultural and Livestock Plan 2014/2015 strengthens support for sustainable agribusiness. Individual credit for Low Carbon Agriculture has a limit of R$ 3 — independent of other loans — in the case of funding for planting commercial forests. A total of R$ 4.5 billion is available for this specific line of credit. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply expects to increase forested areas from 6 million to 9 million hectares by 2020, reducing the emission of 8 million to 10 million tons of CO2 equivalent.

Crop-Livestock-Forest Integration joins productivity with sustainability

One of the world’s largest economies and a global agribusiness leader, Brazil has become increasingly committed to meeting the growing demand for food in the country and the world. But it’s not enough just to produce more — we must do so in a sustainable manner. Because of this, Brazilian agricultural research, headed by Embrapa, invests in developing not only efficient systems but also those that are more sustainable economically, socially and environmentally.

One of the highlights is Crop-Livestock-Forest Integration, part of the Brazilian government's strategy to reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Brazil also is making gains in research into technologies for environmental and eco-systemic services, such as soil and plant carbon sequestration and improvements in water quality.

Growing while protecting the environment

"Our country has made significant strides in building a sustainable development standard. It is possible for a country to grow. It is possible that such a country that grows also distributes income. And it is possible that this country that grows, and distributes income, also is inclusive, that  it is a country that preserves and protects the environment."
